Dismantling of Remington new model army 1858

The numbers of the parts cited are those used in the above diagram to which reference should be made.

Always on principle take care to check that the weapon is empty, barrel empty, no primer on the chimneys.

The screwdriver must not exceed the width of each screw to avoid scratches, the second screwdriver of 3 or 3.5 mm is necessary for the axis of the screw.
Cam-retainer and trigger and for the axle screw of the lifting finger.

A) Put the hammer (31) at the half-armed notch, ie raise the hammer to the first click, thereby lowering the cam-stop of the barrel (17) and releasing the rotation of the barrel.
B) Pull the loading lever (6) out of its catch (2) .
C) Lower the loading lever to release the barrel pin (14).
D) Pull the barrel pin forward (13) Due to the waste of black powder this lever is often difficult to move, help you from the mallet by striking on the head of the axis. The shape of which is intended for this purpose, do not use metal in order not to mark the tan or the steel. The brass stick can be used if the mallet is not enough.

E) Remove the barrel (15) from the right side of the frame, the left-hand exit being generated by the lifting finger (35) unless you release the half-armed notch that has the effect of clearing the lifting finger .
F) Unscrew and remove the load lever shaft.
G) Remove the loading lever (6)
H) Remove the barrel shaft (14)
I) Unscrew the pin from the grip plates (28) Remove the pads Right and left (23) (27)

Be careful not to lose the pin (24) which falls easily and which is necessary to the proper maintenance of the handle.
Disassembly of the mechanism
J) Unscrew and remove the screw of the bridge (22) and remove the bridge (20)

K) Loosen the half-arm of the dog, thus relieving the tension of the dog spring.
(L) Unscrew and remove the camshaft and trigger spring screw (19). And remove the spring (18).
M) Unscrew and remove the cam and retaining pin (30).
N) Remove the cam (17) and trigger (21

O) Loosen the dog spring locking screw (25) until the contact spring (26) is lost.
P) The hammer shaft must now be removed to continue the disassembly. To operate with ease you have to bring a wooden rod of 13mm of diameter. See the next picture. Lift the hammer as if to arm and when the hammer spring is stretched almost completely slide the 13mm object between the spring and the frame, here the utility of the screwdriver that makes the right diameter.

Once the hammer spring (26) is locked in this way it is easy to unscrew and remove the hammer pin (29), no effort is required. You would have a lot of difficulty if you do not block the large hammer spring this way.
Q) Remove the hammer spring (26) To do this, clear the round wedge that we have placed by sliding it down Handle (hence the interest it is soft and round). Use either the mallet to gently strike on the spring, taking care to put the stopper or the round piece of wood under the frame, or the brass rod that is struck with the mallet at the screw of Locking the spring (25).

R) Lower the hammer (31) inside its housing until the axis of the lifting finger (34) is removed on the left side of the lower part of the hammer.

S) Unscrew and remove the shaft of the lifting finger (34) for this screw the screwdriver is the smallest.

T) Remove the lifting finger which is free (35) from underneath the carcass .
U) And finally remove the hammer from its housing over the frame.

As seen in the pictures this recent weapon is dirty as it comes back from a shooting session and had not been totally cleaned for several weeks, the deposits of the powder residues are important especially on the parts of the mechanism s' .The weapon must be regularly cleaned, which the shooter had neglected. There would definitely soon be bad lying due to fouling. It can never be said enough that the black powder is lodged everywhere.

Reassembly.

V) For the reassembly, it is necessary to go backwards, put the hammer back over the carcass, put the lifting finger back and fix it with its axis on the hammer, bring the assembly up to be able to replace the axis of hammer.
Once the shaft has been replaced, the hammer spring must be replaced.
The method I prefer is to engage the spring as far as possible under the hammer's roller by holding it with a pliers by the tip Of the spring, to press it to force it to enter its notch at the bottom of the handle
it will penetrate of the part not taken by the clamp, it will be enough to finish the engagement by a blow of mallet.
Once the spring is in place it is enough to resume the reassembly in reverse of the disassembly.

Also be careful when reassembling the camshaft and trigger spring, make sure that the finger of the spring which compresses the trigger is placed on the detent of the trigger, and to facilitate the placement of the bi-blade spring, put the hammer to the notch Safety, place the spring tighten its screw and here is the famous spring well positioned. Continue the rest of the reassembly.

PS; I could have used a new weapon to make more beautiful pictures of this demonstration but the pedagogical part would not have been conclusive because some people could have believed that it was useless to disassemble all this for the maintenance, believing that The black powder only dirty the barrel and the barrel, proof here that the powder fouls everywhere.
